Meso Herbicide (Tenacity™)
Effective pre- and post-emergence control for over 46 broadleaf weeds and grasses.

Overview

Meso herbicide uses mesotrione, derived from the bottlebrush plant (Callistemon citrinus), to inhibit photosynthesis in weeds. Absorbed through roots, shoots, and leaves, it is distributed throughout plants via xylem and phloem, providing effective weed control.

Meso is one of the few herbicides that can be used during cool-season grass seeding, offering pre-emergence and some post-emergence control.

Weeds Controlled

Includes Common Chickweed, Dandelion, Creeping Bentgrass, Crabgrass (Large, Smooth, Southern), Clover, Mouse-ear Chickweed, Oxalis, Wild Violet, and more. Meso also suppresses Annual Poa.

Application Guidelines

Pre-Emergent at Seeding

  • Rate: 3.6–5.6ml per 100m² in 3-5L of water.
  • Instructions: Apply before seed germination. Irrigate with 3mm water immediately after application.
  • Compatibility: Can be tank-mixed with NZLA Etho for enhanced weed control in Rye and Tall Fescue lawns.

Note: Do not use as a pre-emergent on Fine Fescue lawns due to reduced seedling density. For blends with <20% Fine Fescue, Meso may still be suitable.

Post-Emergent Application

  • Rate: 3.6–5.6ml per 100m² in 4-5L of water.
  • Timing: Apply 4+ weeks post-germination after 2-3 mowings.
  • Enhancements: Use a surfactant (e.g., Silmaxx) for difficult weeds.

Pre-Emergent on Established Turf

  • Apply to established turf followed by irrigation to create a soil barrier against weeds. Provides 6-8 weeks of control.
  • EPA Restriction: Maximum 2 applications per year. Ideal timing is early spring when weeds are in early stages.

Best Practices

  • Use a spray dye like NZLA Indicate to avoid overlapping. NZLA Indicate breaks down with UV rays and requires only 8ml per 1L of spray solution.
  • Avoid watering for at least 6 hours and mowing for 24 hours post-application.
  • Keep pets and children off treated areas until dry (ideally 24 hours).

Warnings

  • May cause temporary turf discolouration (bleaching). Follow label rates carefully to minimise this effect.
  • Do not use on food crops, grazing areas, or animal feed crops.

Regulatory Information

  • Active Ingredient: 480 g/L Mesotrione (suspension concentrate).
  • Approval Code: HSR002475 (HSNO Act 1996). For full details, visit epa.govt.nz.

Summary: Meso provides targeted, reliable control of weeds in cool-season turf while supporting sustainable lawn care.
